WHO WE ARE

Holsen Mendez

Born in Guatemala, Holsen Mendez came to the US in 1995 and quickly integrated into American life. A few years after his arrival, he encountered friends involved in carpentry, sparking his interest in the craft. Holsen began apprenticing in North Carolina under seasoned professionals, absorbing knowledge while assisting his colleagues. Initially tasked with basic responsibilities such as wood cutting and framing measurements, he maintainted a dedication to the trade and a strong desire to learn. Continually expanding his network, Holsen collaborated with various tradesmen on different projects, seizing opportunities to further enhance his skills while maintaining a full-time carpentry role.

After a number of years working in carpentry in NC, one of the professional framers that he was working with asked him if he would be willing to move to Daytona Beach, FL to help him build a new sub-development from start to finish. Although he was apprehensive, Holsen agreed to make the move, knowing it would greatly expand his skill set. It was in Daytona, upon the completion of the subdivision, that he learned cabinetry, foundation work, tiling, bathrooms - all of the interior and exterior work that planted the seed for starting his own construction company.

His work was creating some buzz, and he was contacted, back in 2010, by Trinity Development about coming back to North Carolina to work. Hungry to get back to the state that felt most like home, he came back to work as a contractor for Trinity. It was with Trinity that he expanded into finishes and remodeling, finessing his craft even further. He loved that he was able to inject beauty and design into his work now, and it also gave Hoslen the opportunity to work on different things every day, which was exciting. He also loved working to update older homes, and not just work on new construction. His passion grew as he began to ask questions like, how can we preserve what exists but still make updates that will bring joy? How can we make something new while respecting what exists?

His true passion in starting Mendez Craftsman is making all homes as beautiful as possible. He loves being able to work with his team of tradesmen - a lot of whom are family members who have been trained by Holsen himself - to build dream homes, both new and old. Holsen uses his vast experience set to give opportunities to his employees and help them bring their own visions of expertise and entrepreneurship to life. He's also proud to bring his family into the business; Mendez Craftsman is truly a family owned and operated endeavor.
